SpongeBoost’s first comic launched at a workshop in Berlin

On 13 March 2025, SpongeBoost partners from Deutsche Umwelthilfe hosted a hybrid workshop in Berlin titled "Sponge.Power.Climate. – Innovatively Communicating Sponge Landscapes as Nature-Based Solutions". The event, attended by participants from across Germany, marked the official launch of SpongeBoost’s first science comic book.

In the first part of the workshop, Maria Mincheva from Pensoft highlighted the role of science communication as it acts as a bridge between research and the public. Afterwards, Carina Darmstadt from Environmental Action officially introduced the SpongeBoost comic book, developed in collaboration with Melissa Harms and Nele Schacht from parzelle34 in Weimar. Their creative illustrations brought Spongy from an idea to our real superhero, designed to present the SpongeBoost project and its mission and make complex ecological processes engaging for a wider audience.

Following the presentation, a storytelling workshop encouraged participants to share creative ideas about new "sponge stories". This engaging exchange provided a valuable opportunity to bring together experts from various fields and communication professionals.

Each edition of the SpongeBoost comic book will be published in print and digitally, ensuring open access so it remains freely available. The first one is now available on Zenodo in English and German. Translations for more European languages will follow.
