Public launch of “Wetlands in a Changing Climate”, a new publication on restoring coasts and floodplains
An open-access volume focusing on wetland restoration in the context of climate change will be launched at a virtual event on 26 February 2026. The publication, "Wetlands in a Changing Climate: Restoring Coasts and Floodplains", will be presented during an online session from 10:30 to 12:00 CET, held via Zoom and open to the public.
The event is aimed at everyone working on, or with an interest in, wetland restoration at the biodiversity–climate interface, including representatives from government agencies, EU institutions, research institutes, implementation projects and NGOs. It will highlight the vulnerability of riverine and coastal wetlands to climate change and outline strategies to strengthen their resilience. Further topics include how to assess and communicate the multifunctional benefits of wetland-based nature-based solutions, lessons learned from restoring coasts and floodplains across Europe, and opportunities to scale up wetland action in the context of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.
The Special Issue "Wetlands in a Changing Climate: Restoring Coasts and Floodplains" brings together 15 peer-reviewed articles by more than 100 European authors. Published in the open-access Nature Conservation journal, the volume combines the latest insights from wetland science, practice and policy in a transdisciplinary format.
The publication is an outcome of the BioClim-Wetlands project, commissioned by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUKN). The project is implemented by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), iDiv and adelphi, in cooperation with the ENCA Interest Group on Climate Change, and supports the implementation of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
