On 13 February 2025, SpongeScapes hosted a webinar titled "Introduction to Sponge Measures", focusing on enhancing sponge functioning at the landscape scale. The online session was presented by two experts: Dr. Ellis Penning from Deltares in the Netherlands and BenoƮt Fribourg-Blanc from the International Office for Water in France, who is responsible for the Sponge Knowledge Platform.
Dr. Penning, an expert in nature-based solutions and project coordinator for both SpongeScapes and SpongeWorks, explained the concepts of sponge functioning at a landscape scale. She highlighted three key principles for effectively retaining water in the landscape, which helps mitigate both droughts and flooding. Dr. Penning brought attention to the role of SpongeBoost, one of the sister projects, which focuses on raising awareness about landscape resilience against floods and droughts.
Together, SpongeScapes, SpongeBoost and SpongeWorks aim to provide knowledge for improving sponge functioning and to implement effective sponge measures on the ground.
The next SpongeScapes webinar is scheduled for 21 May 2025. In the meantime, you can watch the replay of this session on YouTube and find the resources here.
