Celebrating World Wetlands Day
World Wetlands Day is marked on 2 February, drawing attention to the crucial role wetlands play in supporting biodiversity, managing water resources and strengthening climate resilience. Covering more than 12.1 million square kilometers worldwide, about 6% of the Earth’s land surface, wetlands are needed for human survival. In these essential ecosystems, water is the primary factor controlling the environment and plant and animal life. The water in our wetlands is one of our most vital natural resources.
This year’s theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage,” highlights the timeless role of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity.
SpongeBoost is contributing to these efforts by focusing on wetland restoration through the enhancement of their natural sponge functions. By helping wetlands store more water and reduce flood risks, we aim to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions that support long-term sustainability and safeguard these ecosystems for the future.
